No visit to Cannes is complete without spending time on La Croisette<\/strong>, the city’s world-famous waterfront boulevard. Stretching for around two kilometres along the Mediterranean coast, this elegant promenade is lined with palm trees, manicured gardens, luxury boutiques, grand hotels and sandy beaches. It perfectly captures the glamour for which Cannes has become internationally renowned.<\/p>

Originally little more than a coastal path in the 19th century, La Croisette developed into one of Europe’s most prestigious promenades as wealthy British and European visitors began wintering on the French Riviera. Long before Cannes became associated with luxury hotels and red carpets, it was a small fishing village centred around Le Suquet<\/strong>, the city’s charming old quarter. Perched on a hill overlooking the harbour, this historic neighbourhood offers a fascinating contrast to the glamour of La Croisette.<\/p>

Le Suquet is best explored on foot. Its narrow cobbled streets wind between colourful houses, flower-filled balconies, independent boutiques and traditional Proven\u00e7al restaurants. Unlike the modern seafront, the atmosphere here feels authentic and peaceful, making it one of the most enjoyable places to wander.<\/p>

At the summit stands the Church of Notre-Dame d’Esp\u00e9rance<\/strong>, a beautiful Gothic church dating from the 16th century. Nearby are the remains of the medieval castle, now home to the Mus\u00e9e des Explorations du Monde<\/strong>, which houses collections ranging from Mediterranean antiquities to artefacts from Asia, Oceania and the Americas.<\/p>

One of the highlights of Le Suquet is the panoramic viewpoint overlooking Cannes. Although the Cannes Film Festival takes place for only a few weeks each year, its influence is visible throughout the city all year round. The focal point is the Palais des Festivals et des Congr\u00e8s<\/strong>, the modern conference centre that hosts one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.<\/p>

Even when no events are taking place, visitors can stand on the famous red-carpet staircase where countless international actors, directors and filmmakers have posed for photographers. Just fifteen minutes by ferry from Cannes lies one of the French Riviera’s greatest hidden treasures: the L\u00e9rins Islands<\/strong>. These peaceful islands provide a complete contrast to the lively atmosphere of Cannes and are perfect for a relaxing day surrounded by nature and history.<\/p>

The largest island, \u00cele Sainte-Marguerite<\/strong>, is famous for Fort Royal<\/strong>, where the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask<\/strong> was imprisoned during the reign of Louis XIV. Visitors can tour the fortress, explore the former prison cells and learn about one of France’s greatest historical mysteries.
