The fortress combines medieval architecture with 17th-century military engineering and today forms part of the <strong data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"374\">Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM).<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"485\">The site&#8217;s history stretches back nearly a thousand years, dating back to the <strong data-start=\"489\" data-end=\"506\">12th century. <\/strong><\/p><ul><li class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"485\">The Knights Hospitaller (Order of Saint John of Jerusalem) established a commandery, hospital, church, and monastery on the site and the fort derives its name from this religious order.<\/li><li>In the 15th century, the <strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"793\">Tower of King Ren\u00e9 (Tour du Roi Ren\u00e9)<\/strong> was constructed and remains one of the oldest surviving structures within the complex.<\/li><li>Following unrest in Marseille in the 1660s, King <strong data-start=\"968\" data-end=\"981\">Louis XIV<\/strong> ordered the construction of Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas to strengthen royal control over the city. Interestingly, many of the cannons were aimed toward Marseille itself rather than out to sea, symbolizing the king&#8217;s authority over the rebellious city.<\/li><li><strong data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1307\">During the French Revolution, <\/strong>the fort served as a prison for political prisoners, including members of the royal family.<\/li><li>In <strong data-start=\"1440\" data-end=\"1457\">World War II, <\/strong>occupied by German forces, the fort suffered severe damage when a munitions depot exploded during the Liberation of Marseille in 1944.
